ASB POLYFEST 2015- Recount by Katrina Leatigaga

Sun shining in my face early in the morning. So pleased and thankful that I was selected to go to the polyfest this year. It was so unbelievable, I felt so lucky.

As we strolled to the bus with enjoyment we were surprised that Miss Tuapawa was driving. “Just can fit” I told myself. As we reached the Poly festival it was jam-packed and parking was pretty occupied so we needed to park at the Flat bush Primary School. That was the only car park we could find.

When we got through there was a lot of food, smoothies, drinks, shouting and lots more. Smelling delicious food and seeing James Cook perform was brilliant. Maybe TWA can perform there one day too.  A lot of people I knew just passed me by like they didn't even know me. About 5 or 6 people.

Angel lost her wallet because her bag was open. When she knew there was money in it, she was angry. When she knew I had found it she was pleased again.

When we finished walking around, like around the whole block, we were exhausted. Before we departed back to school we chillaxed at the Niuean stage with Lusia, Miss Magaoa and Miss Tuapawa .

Alissa had an idea. When she saw people dancing up on the stage, she dared me and said “I’ll give you twenty dollars if you go up and dance” so I did. The funniest thing is that Alissa gave me a box of freddo’s for $3.00 instead of $20.

POLYFEST excursion 2015 (Year 7/8's)

An awesome day out at Polyfest. Well done for making it up onto the Niuean stage Alissa and Katrina. Good practice for the years to come (:

Well done to Jenny (Room 10) and Moengaroa for also getting up on stage. Sorry I was too slow in getting out my camera. Groovy moves !!

Out of the 25 students we took, this was a first time experience for 16 students. They had never been to a Polyfest before, until this day. Will have some of their stories posted, once they have completed them.

MONDAY MATHS

Question: Robert has 816 marbles. He puts 3/8 of them into his pocket for a game. How many does he put into his pocket??

Lino, Neeven and Brandon's thinking:

3/8 of 816=306 marbles

8x100=800   (We used 100 to get closer to 800. Now we are left with only 16...so)
8x2=16 so... 100 + 2 = 102
800+16=816

102 x 3 (numerator)=306 marbles in his pocket

BIG IDEAS: multiplying 8 x what = 816 rather than dividing 816 and 8
                   : multiplying with 100
                   : multiply by splitting factors

Question: I have 608 sweets. I eat three quarters of them. How many sweets have I eaten?

Sione and Canaan's thinking:

3/4 of 608 =456 sweets

4x150=600
4x2=8

150+2=152       3x152=?

                         3x150=450
                         3x2=6

450+6=456
