Science Unit - Learning Intentions

What’s the Big Idea?
Bacteria – Friend or Foe?
Students will develop a basic understanding of what bacteria is and learn about some major diseases throughout history.

What is the Key Learning for Students?
Living World:
Life Processes:  Recognise that there are life processes common to all living things and that these occur in different ways.

Science Learning Outcomes:
Students will be able to:

1.      Research how bacteria move, where they live, and how they reproduce;
2.      Learn how bacteria can be helpful or harmful;
3.      Create a presentation illustrating what they learned about bacteria;
4.      Explain how some ‘disaster diseases’ spread.

BACTERIA. Friend of Foe?

Day 1: Bacteria samples collected

Day 6: The 'Looks'

PETRI DISHES and COTTON SWABS were used.

We gathered a variety of bacteria samples and analysed their characteristics. They had a disgusting look and smell to them.

A Special Time

Written by Sammy Topia.

For our writing test we had to write about a special time or something special we did with our whanau. Here is my story...(partly edited)

New Born Baby.

At 7.20pm, my brother's girlfriend had given birth to their first new born, named Jacob. I was so shocked and relieved because my brother's girlfriend was so scared that she wasn't going to have the baby at that particular time and day.

Getting called up by the mid-wife was so frightening just because my brother's girlfriend did not actually know what she had to do, at that time. My sister in law was in great pain. She could hardly feel herself.

My sister in law was arguing with the nurses for half an hour. She wasn't allowed to push or anything. After time ticked on she finally had her baby - Jacob. My nana was so relieved and blank. It was indescribable.

Meanwhile, my sister-in-law rang her dad to come and pick her up, but the mid-wife was trying to explain herself properly, that they couldn't take the baby home as they needed to see the baby's sugar levels go back to normal, and also, because they still needed to do more blood tests. To be honest, I was also blank but happy at the same time.

My sister in-laws family were jumping up and down like they had ants in their pants.

My brothers name is Hakopa and the baby's name is Jacob. Jacob in Maori is Hakopa, that is why my brother wanted to name his precious baby - Jacob.

This was a special time for me and my family.

The Beginning of something good

MATHS - A New Game Changer - A New Challenge!

Today room 7 has started a new way of doing maths work. Here is what we think about it.

HEREORA: It was really fun and a great way to learn maths.

DARIAN: Today maths was super amazing because we are not working alone but having fun as a group.

DANIELLE: Today maths was hard for me but it was also fun working together as a team and learning more.

CHARDAE: Today maths was much more better than working by yourself  . Working in a group is more super fantastic. We all work together as one.

SAMMY: Today was a relief learning and working together to get the right answer!

EVA: Today maths was hard because I didn't know how to work out the answer.

RECOUNT BY DANII

Long Weekend
It was 6:30am in the morning - ON A WEEKEND!! I had to get up bright and early for the Niuean Tag Tournament. Although surprisingly I was not allowed to play, I was forced to go and support my siblings and my village, Lakepa.
Everyone was rushing around like pigs on a farm looking for their red uniforms and bags they had prepared the night before. Not long after we headed off to the field.
As we arrived the rain started to pour and pour and pour!! I was soaked and freezing cold, at times like this I wish I had just stayed at home in my big, warm, comfortable bed doing anything other than this. To make it worse, there was no shelter so I had to sit on the disgusting, muddy, wet grass.
The horn blew and it was time for the first game. Everyone began to crowd around the field but I just couldn’t stand the rain anymore so I snatched the iPad and went and sat in the car. When the horrible rain stopped I decided to get out and go watch the finals.
In shock, Lakepa made it to the finals but I didn’t watch the game. They placed 2nd overall and the team went home happy and proud that horrible, rainy day.
